About this blog

Before morphing into the glittering metropolis it is today, Madrid went from being an outpost of Islam, to defender of the Catholic faith, to vanguard of a revolutionary Republic, to the seat of power of a draconian fascist regime. Reflecting a personal fascination with the city’s chequered history, this blog aims to tackle subjects as diverse as the meteoric rise and fall of the Spanish empire and the tragedy of the Civil War, investigating the impact these events have had on the city’s architecture and population.
